The Biggest misconception about an internet business is that somehow, there are no marketing costs. 

All real businesses must dedicate administrative time and capital to marketing.  This applies not only to brick and mortar businesses, but to internet businesses as well.

If you have an exisiting busines, creating a web page will not magically bring in new revenue. It will probably cost more than it generates at first.  But having an internet presence is like having a telephone number.  You are not going to do business with someone without a phone number.  Your business URL in many ways is simply proof that you are a real business.

Why have a web presence? The internet, and a web site in particular, is a great way to deliver information to customers when they do not need personal assistance or service. It also provides a way for customers to choose "self-service" over the web.  You can have automated orders, link to your vendors, salepeople and customers. You can let customers see their account information and keep it up to date.
